Mainstreaming Services

This sign has come to represent disabilities in our world. But does the average person know exactly what it means? How do those with disabilities, who aren’t in wheelchairs, feel about this representation? Did it ever occur to you that it might mean different things to different people?

The US Census Bureau’s 2006 American Community Survey (ACS) has five categories of Employment Status of Persons with Disabilities. Sensory. Physical. Mental. Self-Care. Go-Outside-Home. Each category comes with its own subcategories. Those are quite a lot of disabilities for an employer to have to deal with. In the same survey 2.4 million people were counted as working with some form of disability.

Bringing together the working community and those with disabilities is not an insurmountable task. Your company or organization can start with something as simple as using the People First Language.

  • e.g. instead of “the handicapped” say “people with disabilities”
  • e.g. instead of “paraplegic” say “he has paraplegia”
  • e.g. instead of “handicapped parking” say “accessible parking”

If you are working or would like to work with individuals with disabilities, you need to be working with us.
